How many times have you bought someone flowers only to see them frantically hunting for a vase to put them in? Well next time why not treat them to a vase instead. Beautiful flowers deserve a gorgeous vase, and all of the vases I have found will look fanastic with flowers or on their own.

Nerjit Dhol creates stunning contemporary glass designs including these hanging vases, which can be used indoors and outdoors, hanging from a beam, picture rail or hook.

From her studio in Hampshire Caroline Green produces beautiful hand thrown porcelain pieces that will add a touch of style to any room, as well as being practical. LoCo Glass was set up by Colin and Louise Hawkins and is based in their studio in the Cotswolds. Louise and Colin create some beautiful hand blown pieces including this gorgeous Inca range. I particularly like the steel blue. LoCo Glass are also happy to take commissions to create one off pieces. Some of their work is available through John Noott Galleries.

If you are looking for a gift with a little more history then Steptoes Dog is a great site to visit. They are vintage online boutique with a great range of homewares, jewellery, bags and designs. I found these hand painted 1930's Art Deco vases on their site, along with many other treats that I would love to buy.

Finally, if you are keen to recycle or know someone who is then these wrap covers would make the ideal gift. Designed by Emma Verner at The Cotton Potter these beautiful calico wrap covers will turn a tin can or jam jar into a lovely vase. Each one ios handmade and decorated with fabric remnants, vintage buttons, hatpins and embroidery.

Keeping Warm on Bonfire Night

As today is Bonfire Night it is the one evening of the winter when we all want to be outside to see the wonderful displays. However, with the cold weather I for one also like to make sure that I am well wrapped up to keep me cosy and warm. This made me think that particularly at Christmas a handmade hat, scarf or gloves would make a wonderful gift, particularly for someone like me who feels the cold.

In Cumbria, Kate Mawson knits these wonderful cloche hats in a variety of colours so no matter what your favourite colour there will be one to suit you. You can also buy scarves and gloves in matching colours, all made from soft felted lambswool.

On Folksy I found these gorgeous hand knitted fingerless glove arm warmers. Ideal if you want that extra cosy feeling underneath your jacket or coat. Made in a range of colours by Han d Kn itted Things from an alpaca/wool blend yarn, they are just the thing for a cold winters evening.

Janie Withers specialises in creating contemporary knitted fashions and home accessories. I love this Quartz scarf. Made from Geelong and Merino lambswool two tone scarf in dark pink and graphite, it is just the thing to make you feel brighter in winter.

If you would like to support producers of organic wool then Wendy of Wendy Keith Designs has striven to produce an entirely British organic wool garment. These gloves and scarf in a lovely Bramble and Stalk stitch can be traced back to the West Country organic sheep farm.

Finally to add that finishing warmth touch there are these slouch socks from Ruth Cross. Hand knitted in supersoft Scottish lambswool, they are great for wearing under boots or wellies.

Eco-Friendly Gifts

In the past few years the numbers of eco-friendly gifts available has rapidly increased. Many internet and high street shops have recognised the commercial potential of appealing to people’s wish to help the environment. So what are the most unusual and interesting green gifts available?

Rescued Rags are a Leeds based company who handcraft their products from repurposed and recycled materials. I love these recycled record bowls. Although not a new idea if you buy from Rescued Rags and want a specific band or album they will try and find the one that you require. Many other companies simply send out a random album.

This fantastic clock from Green and Present may look like slate but is actually made from 80 vending machine coffee cups. Green and Present have a great range of reclaimed and recycled products both gifts and homewares from paperclips made from waste plastic to antique butchers blocks.

Whilst recycling glass has been around for a long time, glasses made from old beer bottles can be found in many shops turning old glass in to art is something I haven’t really seen before. Amy McCarthy of AmyOrangeJuice has a small studio making stained glass windows. However, she also uses reclaimed and leftover glass to make lovely pieces such as this Snowy Winter Village scene. These would make great gifts for any home.

On the Ecocentric website I found this great new gift that will appeal to gardeners. The Grow Your Own Wine Rack kit has been developed by artist and designer Lois Walpole. You make the wine rack by tethering together 22 lengths of willow. It takes two to three years before the growing willow grafts together and it can be harvested and brought indoors, to hold up to 10 bottles. However, there is nothing to stop you using it whilst eating outside in the summer during those years.

At Nigel’s Eco Store I found this brilliant solution to all that gift wrapping waste that is created every year. Reusable gift wrapping is made by Evergreen Wrap. In a range of gorgeous designs these 70cm x 70cm squares of strong 100% cotton fabric can be used as gift wrap, as a scarf or with a few knots in the right place as a reusable bag.

Special Spoons

Whilst writing the review for Lindsay Interiors pickle spoon and cheese knife set, I was struck by what a nice gift a spoon can be, if beautiful it fulfils the criteria of being useful as well as good to look at.

Later on I was looking at the Swings and Pretty website and saw that they will soon be stocking this lovely spoon by Glover and Smith. These long handled spoons have a hook so that you can hang on the side of your favourite jam or honey jar. Swings and Pretty will have three designs to choose from a bee for honey lovers and strawberry and raspberry designs for those who prefer jame. They are made from lead free pewter and each one comes in a presentation box with an explanation of what it is for and who made it.

Damson and Slate was set up by interior stylist Hilary Lowe who wanted to promote, and source the best of Welsh crafts. On the site I found these wonderful ceramic cowl spoons, which could be used for sugar, salt, coffee or as a decorative item.

If you are looking for wooden spoons then these beautifully hand carved spoons from Steve Tomlin are ideal. Made from local greenwood the spoons are carved to traditional designs, and will age beautifully as they are used. Steve also carves baby feeding spoons, ladles and serving spoons.

For a special occassion such as a Christening then a silver spoon is a traditional gift. These handmade twisted silver spoons from Pruden and Smith are gorgeous and would be a treasured keepsake. They are available in three sizes and come in their own black presentation box.

Finally if you want to add a little colour to the kitchen then these jewelled spoons from Cox and Cox are perfect. They come presented in a gift bag with six colours in each - red, blue, green, yellow, purple and pink.

Gifts for Children's Friends

Now that my daughters are both a little older (6 and 7) they like to buy their close friends a small Christmas gift. This is lovely, but finding something that is both a reasonable price and that isn't just going to get put in a cupboard, is often a difficult task. So I was delighted when my problem was solved by @snapdragonjane onTwitter. Yesterday Jane posted that Snapdragon's applique mirrors were selling well and were maybe being bought as children's gifts. So after a look on the website my girls had fun choosing which design they were going to get for each friend. I particularly like this spacehopper one, but unfortunately neither of them choose that one.

However, it maybe mirrors are not quite what you are looking for, so I have searched for some alternatives, that will be a hit but not cost too much.

These lovely fairtrade flower keyrings from Hatti Trading are ideal as just a little something for your child to give to their friends. They come in packs of five and so are also ideal for party bags.

For the boys there is this lovely eco-friendly dynamo powered torch. Available from ECOutlet, parents will love this as it requires no batteries, simply childpower, and children always love torches. ECOutlet also has pencil cases made from recycled car tyres which may also appeal to your child's friends.

On Misi I found this lovely bracelet by Trinkerbell. Made from polymer clay and nickle free spacers Trinkerbell makes a wide range of girls bracelets in some lovely colours. Each bracelet is sent out in a pink or lilac organza bag.

Made 4 Your Books is a seller on Folksy and sells fantastic bookmarks. There are ones suitable for both boys and girls, but I particularly like this football book mark.

Hopefully there is something that I have found which is suitable for your child's friends. However, if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Christmas Tree Decorations

As tomorrow is the 1st November I have decided that it is time I started to seriously think about Christmas preparations. After all I know of some people who are already wrapping presents! To get me into the Christmas spirit I have started to think about decorations. Previously our Christmas tree was decorated with just red and gold. However, I think that the time has come to add more colour and handmade magic. Having looked for some decorations I have seen some wonderful ones to choose from. They also make fantastic gifts for anyone who loves to decorate their tree with beautiful things.

I love these free blown heart baubles from Bath Aqua Glass. Based in their studio in Bath the craftsmen and women make a range of glass products, each made by hand and therefore unique. Bath Aqua Glass also offers workshops and hen party glass blowing events.

Jo Heckett makes her beautiful porcelain Christmas decorations in her studio in London. My favourite is this set of four letters which can be purchased in white, pink or aqua. You can choose whichever letters you want and so they can be used for tree decorations or whatever you choose for example as initials to tie to Christmas stockings.

This beautiful mistletoe bauble is hand decorated by Katherine Pollen who makes a range of ceramic items. These elegant 3" diameter china Decorative Balls are hand painted and come with a satin ribbon ready to hang. They are also available from Heaven Sent.

On Birchcraft Designs website you will find a wonderful range of handcrafted wooden Christmas decorations from Gingerbread men to robins there is something for everyone, including bag and shoe decorations. They also have a range of punched metal decorations that would look great on any tree.

Finally from Niki Jones there are these stunning paper mache handpainted teardrop baubles. These beautiful baubles will add that splash of colour to any Christmas tree.

So that is the Christmas tree decorations sorted out now just 54 days left to do the rest.

Tea towel works of art

In Homes and Gardens this month I spotted this fantastic tea towel by Julie at Cloth Ears. It looked good enough to frame and put up on the wall, so I set out to find other great art on a tea towel.

If you are looking for an unusual wedding invitation or thank you then these are ideal. Made by Ben and Karen at The Original Wedding Tea Towel, you can choose from a selection of designs or if you are feeling artistic you can come up with your own design.

The idea came about as an eco-friendly option that could be kept by the recipent, instead of being thrown away after a week on the mantlepiece.

From Lizzie Prestt Designs comes this fabulous England-upon-Sea tea Towel. Available from To Dry For, the tea towel combines all the great things about the seaside, the pier, ice creams, beach huts and many more. To Dry For stocks a great range of tea towels from dinosaurs to cakes there is something for everyone.

In her studio in Leicestershire Teresa Cole of Teresa Green Design creates a range of fabric designs from aprons to artwork and table linen to tea towels. All the items are designed and hand printed in her studio on fabric from the UK. I love this Leggy Bird tea towel.

Finally I found Clare Nicolson who's site is full of wonderful fabric prints including this Milky teatowel, which would look great in any kitchen.

So there is no excuse for having boring check pattern tea towels in the kitchen. Buy something that would look just as good framed and on the wall.

Children's Craft Kits for a Rainy Day

Half term is here, and although today is lovely and sunny I am always on the look out for craft activities to fill the rainy day. My girls love craft activities and the sense of achievement that they get from having made something themselves. These kits also make great birthday presents and stocking fillers. So here are my current favourites.

This lovely set of three owls comes complete with patterns, material, glue, needles, threads and instructions. Everything you need to make them. You can even turn the box into a nice little house for them. It is one of a range of kits available from Pojo and Bel.

Nanette Regan designs and makes a fabulous range of soft toys. However, she has also started making craft kits so that children, and adults, can make their own. You can choose from the Babushka Bunny, Dinosew or Kokeshi Kitten. My favourite is the blue Babushka Bunny.

It is slightly more difficult to find craft kits that appeal to boys. However, this range of puppet kits include a spaceman, robot, animals and a dinosaur. Each kit comes with everything that you need to make the puppet and it is all made from recycled cardboard, so it is eco-friendly too. The kits are available from a range of internet shops including ECOutlet and Amazon.

Emma Brown is the founder of The Giggleys and makes a huge range of children's craft activity bags from door hangers to patchwork cushions. These can be bought in bulk and would make ideal party bag gifts or activities. I particularly like the sun and dream catcher kit.

After deciding a change of direction after her second child Gillian Harris set up Gillian Gladrag. At her fantastic online shop you can buy premade felt bags but you can also buy kits to make your own bag, bunting, bracelets, corsage and this wonderful child's felt bag.

So buy one of these fabulous kits and there will be no more cries of 'I'm bored' on those rainy weekends and holidays, and you will have your own unique handmade achievement at the end.

Beautiful Buttons

I have noticed on my searches through the internet for gifts that buttons are an increasing feature on many items. Whether it is jewellery, bags, cushions, purses or many other items there is a trend to adorn them with beautiful buttons. I can understand this as you only have to wander into a shop like Duttons for Buttons in York to see the wonderful array of colours, patterns and materials that buttons can be made of. So I thought I would devote todays blog to all things button.

I love this Misletoe and Wine themed bracelet, ideal for wearing with any Christmas outfit. Made by Mrs Gibson and available from her Folksy shop. Mrs Gibson creates stunning unique pieces that are inspired by her vintage finds.

These button cards by A Touch of Flow on Folksy are make a lovely alternative to a standard birthday card. Each one is handmade and decorated with slightly different buttons to make them unique.

This fab purse by Natalie Farrell is available from Boutique Gifts. Each purse is individually designed and handmade by Natalie, making them a unique gift for someone.

These button corsages by Raspberry Fairy are made from merino and silk. All handmade in Hampshire the corsages are just part of a wonderful collection of items available on Etsy.

Feed the Birds

I was reminded at the weekend - by my Grandmother - that it is that time of year when the birds really need feeding. After all what else are Grandmothers for, if not to remind of things you would otherwise forget! Outside our front window is the ideal spot for feeding the birds, as they are then close enough for the girls to watch. However, I was not really inspired by the choice of bird feeders at the pet shop. I am sure that the birds don't care, but a bird feeder makes a great gift for a gardener or wildlife spotter, and it is nice to combine function and style.

One of my favourites is this stylish bird feeder made from semi-porcelain clay. Made by JML Pottery and avilable from Folksy it would look good in any garden, whether cottage style or modern.

Also from Folksy is this recycled bottle bird feeder, made by Mark and Helen at Green Bird Creations. You can also buy homes for beneficial insects, toad houses and bird boxes, to turn any garden into a wildlife haven.

Teapots for the perfect cuppa

I was thinking about this months competition to win a fab Snapdragon tea cosie thanks to From The Wilde. This made me realise that the winner will need a great teapot to put underneath their fantastic tea cosie. So I have searched the web for stylish and unique teapots that will provide you with great cuppas day after day.

Imagine Pottery is based near Warminster and makes a great range of earthenware pottery items, including this lovely teapot. Each piece is handcrafted and then glazed in either blue, cream or green.

I love the clean lines and stylish design of this teapot by Helen Harrison of Kilnworks. You can purchase either a 2 or 4 cup pot and if you like the design there are other beautiful designed items of tableware to sit alongside it.

If you are looking for something more unusual then how about the Familia teapot? Designed by Ole Jensen for Normann Copenhagen and available in the UK from Bodie and Fou this teapot is sure to catch the eye and be a talking point for any afternoon tea.

The retro feel of this PomPom teapot by Hannah Turner is fantastic. It is perfect for using everyday, but without being just another teapot. Hannah also has a range of cats, owls, birds ceramics and as well as other beautiful tableware.

Cufflinks with style

I realised the other day that my blog was becoming very female orientated, and that I haven't yet given much thought to the presents that men would like to receive. Then on Twitter someone was asking for anywhere that they could buy some unique cufflinks, so what better place to start.

Of course there are many cufflink styles and designs available, but I have tried to select those that are handmade and therefore not something you will find on the high street, to add a little extra style to those business shirts.

Funky Fused Glass have a fantastic range of cufflinks that look a little like sweets in a shop, you can even order a tie clip to match. In a wide range of colours and designs there is something to suit every taste. I particularly like the ones shown as they remind me of Dolly Mixtures.

In her Deptford studio Allison Wiffen creates these stunning ceramic cufflinks ranging from iconic London landmarks to graffiti and retro patterns. Allison also makes earrings, clocks, pendants and brooches all from the purest earthernware clay.

Working on sheet silver and copper with gold for detailing Becky Crow creates beautiful contemporary jewellery. These Two Tree cufflinks from her Copper Forest range are just lovely and would enhance any shirt.

On Folksy I found Off The Cuff who have a range of cufflinks from humorous through to the ones shown that are made from upcycled watch movements. You can also commission your own design from any photo or design that you choose, making the present truly unique.

Made from old typewriter keys these cufflinks from Sarah Rhodes Jewellery are that little bit different from the scrabble letter cufflinks that seem to be appearing everywhere. As well as punctuation marks you can also get letters to form initials.

So instead of just opting for a pair of high street cufflinks search out something different.

Delicious Chocolate for Chocolate Week

So I started the week with wool, but I thought I would wait until Friday to do my Chocolate Week related blog. After all who doesn't need some chocolate by Friday afternoon. There are events all over the country to celebrate chocolate week, including chocolate spa treatments at the Elms Hotel in Worcestershire and a chocoholics afternoon tea at Brown's Hotel in London.

If someone you know loves chocolate why not treat them to their own chocolate making kit? Put together by Trish Deseine and available from Chocolate by Trish, the kit contains all you need to get started with creating your own delicious chocolates.

Alternatively, if you don't think that making their own chocolates would appeal why not treat them to a chocolate tasting evening. Run by Artisan du Chocolate the tutored tasting session lasts for two hours, where you are able to taste a wide range of products from brownies to chocolate cocktails.

I love this chocolate stilletto shoe by the Monk Bar Chocolatiers. The shoes come in a variety of designs, you can even buy a gift hamper that contains a pair of small and a pair of large stillettos. What a great gift for shoe and chocolate lover.

At Lick The Spoon they take chocolate to a whole new level and create many delicious sounding treats. I would love to try this Strawberries and Cream chocolate slab. Lick The Spoon also make wedding favours, bespoke chocolate gifts, cakes and easter eggs. Just looking at their website makes me hungry.

At the Chocolate Cafe in Manchester you could treat someone to a chocolate pizza, with a choice of toppings or a fantastic chocolate hamper. The hampers are made up to suit the gift recipients tastes and so different everytime.

So don't wait until Christmas and Easter, chocolate is a great gift at anytime of the year.

Eco-friendly shopping bags

How many times have you left the house to go shopping only to realise that you have left behind your bags for life? If you are anything like me you will have probably lost count. So I decided that the way to make me remember my eco-friendly shopping bags was to find ones that I wouldn't want to leave behind. Buying these bags as gifts is not only good for the planet, but they will be appreciated for their stunning designs.

This birdsong bag from Lush Designs is exactly the sort of bag I was searching for. Made of strong canvas it will hold all that shopping as well as standing out from the crowd with its fantastic design. Lush Designs are based in their studio in Deptford and create a range of fabulous designs on lampshades, aprons, cushions and many other household items.

The Vintage Fabric Market is a family owned business near Cambridge and they source vintage finds and sell them on or use the fabric to create beautiful new items such as this beige and burgandy shopping bag.

I have featured Kate Garey before in my blog on Cosmetic bags. However, I couldn't resist another mention for this fun Gingerbread Men bag.

Big Stitch are a new company set up by two mums in Weybridge. They embroider jute bags from your own design or your child's design to create your own unique shopping bag. The bags are available in two sizes are ideal for carrying bulky items - like new shoes.

If you want something more portable then these folding shoppers that I found on Folksy are perfect. Made by Love From Beth, they are ideal for keeping in your handbag until you need them, and would make an ideal gift.

Keyrings with charm

I have to admit that I am starting to think about Christmas shopping. I know it is only October, but I have a large family, and lots of gifts to find. One of the things that I always struggle to find are stocking fillers that aren't just going to be put in a drawer somewhere never to be seen again. The other day when looking on the internet I found some lovely keyrings, and realised these would be an ideal stocking filler as they are always useful.

I love these handmade keyrings from Honeypips on Folksy. Each one is made from beautiful cotton fabrics which are hand cut, and then embroidered onto a hardwearing wool felt. As they are made individually each one is slightly different and unique.

This beautiful bird keyring is made in Finland from birch wood and is available from Hygge. There is also a bird brooch made from birch wood available.

If you are looking for something with more colour on Misi I found PebbleRox Jewellery. Based in Bristol they create wonderful pieces from a range of beads and charms including this lovely bag charm/keyring.

Based at the Craft and Design Centre in Manchester Suzanne of Suzanne Devine Designs uses mixed media to create her purses, bags and accessories. I particularly like these lovely leaf keyrings, which are available in a range of colours to match any bag or outfit.

I thought about including fingerprint keyrings but I think that their availablity is now so well known I looked for something a little different. I found The Little Glass Kiln who stock fused glass keyrings made in Yorkshire and designed by Victoria Berry. Victoria also designs and makes a range of keyrings from sycamore.

Woolly Wonders

This week is National Wool Week so I thought I would get the week off to a great start by looking at the handmade woolly wonders that you can buy as gifts. Backed by John Lewis and Marks and Spencers Wool Week hopes to revive the love of wool as an eco-friendly and lasting alternative to other throw away fabrics. The week is being launched with an area of Savile Row being turfed so that a flock of sheep can graze.

This cushion available from Folksy and made by Tinyinc is a lovely example of how wool can be a warming and cosy addition to any lounge or sitting room. Who wouldn't want to snuggle up with a good book and glass of wine if they had cushions as comfy as this to sit on?

Whilst looking for hand-knitted cushions I also found this beautiful throw. It would look fantastic on a bed or sofa, and is ideal for the autumn nights that are rapidly creeping up on us. Made in Wales and named Carreg this blanket is in a pattern inspired by the Ceredigions` glorious mountain landscape and is available from Jane Beck Welsh Blankets.

These beautiful handknitted handbags are produced in Warwickshire by The Toft Alpaca Shop. With their oversize, handturned button they make a real statement. Alternatively if you are feeling up to the challenge, you can always knit one yourself with the knitting kits that are available.

As someone who spends alot of time sat in front of a computer the next crocheted gift would be most welcome. Available from Lemonade and Lamingtons on Folksy is this wonderful mug cosy. There are a range of colours available and the flowers on some are detachable to be used as a brooch, so two great gifts in one.

Finally, I love this stylish knitted wrap from Ruth Cross. Hand knitted and available in a range of colours it would be the perfect way to keep warm on a winter day.

In celebration of this months fantastic competition to win a Snapdragon tea cosie thanks to From The Wilde I thought it would be appropriate to do a tea cosie blog. Tea cosies were a familiar sight on kitchen tables in the past, but then seemed to disappear. However, I am delighted to say that they are making a come back, perhaps this can be linked to the increasing popularity of baking and cupcakes. After all nothing goes better together than cake and a good cuppa.

I just love the spots and the flower at the top. Jane set up Cosy Cosies when she first started selling tea cosies and has now expanded into iphone and hot water bottle cosies.

If bright spots aren't your thing then perhaps the elegant tea cosie by Elizabeth Cook Design will be more your cup of tea - sorry couldn't resist! With a beautiful leaf pattern it will look good on any table.

Today is National Poetry Day, and has inspired me to search for poetry related gifts. Poems are a thoughtful way to express thoughts and feelings, so make a gift very personal. So be inspired on National Poetry Day to express you innerself.

From Zazzle you can purchase a variety of poem quotes on mugs such as the one shown, in cards or on coasters.

Not On The High Street have a range of poetry inspired gifts but my favourite has to be this tea towel by Kitchen Sink Dramas with the a poem by Carol Ann Duffy about tea. Great for drying up or framing for the kitchen wall.

Loobytoo on Folksy has used a poem to create a piece of art that would enhance any room. Called 'The mean reds' after a piece from Breakfast at Tiffanys.

On Etsy I found this fantastic calligram designer Joni James who creates poetry in the shape of the object of the poem. I love this apple for the teacher example.

You could also treat someone you know to this Penguin book from Amazon - Poems for Life - which brings together a collection of the best-loved English poems to mark the stages of life from birth to death.

Alternatively, if you are feeling really inspired - and have more poetic talent than I have - then why not write someone an original piece of poetry and create something truely unique.

So it is already October and the year is flying by at an alarming rate. However, it does mean that there are some great Halloween treats available to brighten up any outfit or party. I know I am a little early, but it will be the 31st before we know it, so get planning that Halloween party now.

The first job in any party organisation is the invites and I love these cards from Saffycrafts. Although greetings cards you could use them as invitations and you can put in a personal message inside. All the cards are handmade to order so no two are exactly the same giving your cards that unique appeal.

No Halloween party would be complete without a great costume, and every great outfit needs accessorises. For some unique and handmade jewellery to add the finishing touches to the outfit Heroine Industries on Etsy has some fantastic fun items including this charm bracelet.

As for the food well you could go all out and order a handmade cake from a site such as Donna Makes Cakes who created this wonderful Halloween cake and also make Halloween biscuits and cupcakes. Storing Children's Artwork

As any parent knows when your child starts nursery or preschool you will be faced with an ever mounting pile of their artwork. I have to admit that I am a little sentimental over these pieces of paper and have kept almost everything that my daughter's have produced. However, I think it won't be long before I have to face up to not keeping everything, either that or we will have to extend our loft space! A similar problem is faced by one of my blog readers who has been looking for art storage, so I set about finding beautiful, but practical ways of storing those masterpieces.

Another great idea that I have seen is turning your child's art into a photo book. Finally you can have your child's artwork turned into a 3D stuffed animal by stuffyourdoodle. Toys for Toddlers

Today Toy Talk announce their winners of the 2010 Toy Talk Awards. I love choosing toys for my daughters and I am quite sad that they are now moving on more grown up toys. However, I think it is a testament to the wooden toys that I bought when they were toddlers, that they still play with them now. I want them to have toys that are stimulating, environmentally friendly, that aren't all pink, and that will last more than 5 minutes. So I have put together some of my environmentally friendly favourites for toddlers and preschoolers.

One of their all time favourites was the baby walker with wooden bricks. It won hands down against the very irritating flashing lights and sounds version from V-Tech. The walker was great for helping them take those first steps and they could also use their imagination to create alsorts from the bricks. This version is one of many available from Why Wood Works.

For my eldest daughter's second birthday we bought her first Brio train set and she loved it. Now she is nearly 8 and still enjoys setting the whole thing out, making cities and role playing. The great thing about the train set is that you can add to it over time and children can save pocket money to spend on a new train or other accessory. Available from Amazon and many other online stores.

I have to confess a love of Pintoy and Plan Toy. I am just a little sad that there is no more room in the playroom to add a Pintoy hospital or a Plan Toy kitchen set. However, the girls do have a Pintoy doll's house which has given them hours of pleasure rearranging furniture and acting out little scenarios.

As well as the big companies I think it is important to support small companies who are making limited numbers of toys. However, it is vital to ensure that any toys purchased have a CE mark and meet European Toy Safety Standards.

This tractor and haywagon from Toys For Children is a beautiful example of the type of toy that will last and become a family heirloom. The beauty of wood is that as it is handled it increases its beauty unlike plastic that is not meant to last.

I have often found with jigsaw puzzles that although my children love them, they can easily get damaged and once you have done them a few times the interest wears off. However, we bought a magnetic version of one of these wooden puzzles from Myriad. They can be used to build and make as many patterns as a child has the imagination for.

Finally something that I wish I had invested in. Ostheimer are a German company who have handcrafted toys for more than 50 years. They make a beautiful range of wooden toys that would look stunning in any playroom or bedroom. It is almost impossible to choose my favourite, but I think that this beautiful dragon just makes it to the top. Available from Myriad and Laughing Bear Toys.

So why settle for plastic make your children's toys something that are a pleasure to play with, and that will last for years. I know I am already planning to store all my children's toys for future nephews/nieces.

The Tooth Fairy Visits

On Monday, while I was out my daughter's first tooth fell out. I came back to shouts of 'Mummy come and look, I have a surprise for you.' Fortunately it had waited until after the school photographs. As she has an older sister we were ready for this event, and have a tooth fairy cushion and container so that teeth can await collection. However, many first time parents may be unprepared for this event, and there is nothing worse than putting the tooth under the pillow and then not being able to find it, only for it to turn up a week later to screams of 'The Tooth Fairy left my tooth!' It also helps with the trauma of those first teeth coming out if there is somewhere special to put them.

At the weekend my daughter went to a party for one her friends. The party bags from Party Pieces were cardboard ones that could be coloured in, and then recycled when they were finished with. I thought this was a lovely idea as all too often party bags are thin plastic ones that are emptied and discarded. It made me think about how nice it would be to give out party bags, and gifts that can be used long after the party is over.

Many of us nowadays keep our photographs on the harddrive of our computers, or on our phones. However, nothing beats looking back through a beautiful photograph album to bring back great memories.

Packing for going away this weekend I looked at my cosmetics/toiletry bag, and I think it is time for a replacement. My old one is looking a little bashed and battered. However, combining usefulness with good looks is not always easy so I searched the web and here are my favourites.

If you are just looking for a make up bag and nothing larger then this one from Sewsmitten is great. With its 50's Girl fabric which is designed and printed by Penni and Gnome in their London workshop.

I then found this gorgeous makeup bag by Disaster Designs, available from Little Moose. It has got a waterproof polka dot lining and internal pocket to store your make up securely. There is also a matching overnight bag, wallet and handbag.

For those who like to take more with them then there are some fantastic vanity cases around. I particularly like the range by Kate Garey and I think Robot Love has to be my favourite. Kate also makes a range of bags, fashion items, jewellery and soft toys.

Although not handmade and therefore likely to be seen in the High street I do love this retro Ladybird 'The Party' make up bag by Wild and Wolf, available from the gifted penguin. The Wild and Wolf Ladybird archive series won Gift of the Year 2010 and I have to say I already have some of their products earmarked for dare I say it - Christmas gifts.

Finally there is a gorgeous range of cosmetics bags from Natalie Farrell on Folksy. Each one is handmade by Natalie by carefully selecting each button, ribbon and printed fabric to make each one unique and just that little bit special.

Whilst watching the Great British Bake Off last night - who knew baking could be so tense - I was thinking about how baking has made a great come back. With the likes of the hummingbird bakery, the Primrose Bakery and of course Paul Hollywood's Artisan Bread Company there is really no surprise that few of us can resist tucking into a lovely cupcake or freshly baked loaf of bread. It has also inspired many people to start baking, and sparked a trend for cupcake themed gifts.

So with all those keen bakers out there what better present than something they either use whilst baking, or a reminder of their love of baking. So what great gifts are available? Here are just a few of the many.

What every baker needs is a way to display their efforts in the best possible way. Perfect Purses

I was on twitter yesterday when PantsandPaper tweeted about a purse that she had made, and was selling on Folksy. It made me think what a perfect gift a purse is. Sam at PantsandPaper makes a range of one off purses, all with beautiful detail. She also takes commissions so you can have a favourite photograph included in your purse.

I then found this gorgeous purse by Bebe Bradley at makers-online. Bebe Bradley is one half of Meninafeliz is a collaboration between Bebe and Anne-Marie Vanner and you can find all sorts of original and quirky gift ideas on their website.

If you are searching for a leather rather than fabric purse then Fairysteps is a great website. Set up by Ren who is a self-taught shoemaker all the leather items available on the website are limited editions. I love this pink and purple Sprite purse.

On Cloth-ears site it was a very difficult decision which purse I would choose from their wonderful collection, but in the end I decided my favourite was their 'flutters and fancies' wallet purse, with the lovely birdhouses on the front.

Finally back on Folksy I found these lovely little coin purses by Dinky Daisy, who is also stocked by Not On The High Street. Of course there are also purses that I love by Cath Kidston and Orla Kiely, but I think the ones I have found offer the appeal of being unique or at least limited edition.

Art can enhance any home and makes a great gift. If you know someone who loves art and you would like to treat them to an original work of art, but can't afford to treat them to a Hockney or a Hirst, then help is at hand. There are many talented artists all over the country selling original works of art at a more affordable price, and you never know maybe you will have spotted the next Tracey Emin.

This watercolour is painted by Mimi who uses her local area in Cornwall as the inspiration for her paintings. This view of Porthleven would bring a holiday feel to any home.

On Etsy I found a huge range of art to suit every taste and every budget, but I particularly liked this painting by Kate Boyce who uses mixed media to create her beautiful works of art. Etsy is particularly good if you would like to buy a piece of art that is based on your local area, or a favourite holiday destination, as you can shop local.

There are also some fantastic gallery websites for example apob Contemporary Art Galleries that showcase the work of many artists, including this beautiful art by Gerry Cameron.

If you are looking for a photographic piece of art then there are some stunning photographs available as limited editions, such as the work by photographer Chris Etchells that I found on Art Gallery.co.uk.

In contrast to this lovely clear scene in Scotland my final choice was by Christina Harris. I love the simplicity of the scenes that she paints of sheep in winter.

So when great art can be so affordable why shop on the high street and end up with the same canvas from Next as many other people? There are lots of online and independent galleries out there to suit every taste and budget.

Patchwork Cushions

I am not a brooch wearer, although after seeing the fantastic range on offer I may have to change that. I do, in the meantime have lots of friends and relatives who are, so I am always on the look out for beautiful brooches to buy as gifts. The great thing about brooches is that you can buy unique pieces at a reasonably low cost or you can spend alot on that special gift.

One way of ensuring that your gift is unique is having a picture turned into a brooch. This would make a particularly great present for a mum or grandmother. Made by AM Jewellery each piece is a miniature work of art and is stamped with both the exclusive designer mark and a hallmark.

Cushion Comfort

There are many cushions available in the high street in all manner of colours and designs. However, there is no guarantee that you won't walk into your friends or neighbours house and see exactly the same cushion. Also cushions can be a lovely gift, but they do have to be that little bit special. There are some creative and wonderful cushions available. Here is just a small selection of the ones I have found.

This beautiful cushion is designed and made by Nadia Sparham, who also creates ceramic designs and unique murals as an alternative to wallpaper. Nadia designs the cushions to order, so each design is unique to you.

I was sat thinking that my blog was missing something. It suddenly came to me that this was a blog about presents yet I had made no mention of the dreaded gift - socks. When all else fails who among us hasn't turned to socks as a gift. However, I also thought there must be some more interesting socks out there that would be more appreciated.

From Wee Gooseberry I found this box of odd socks - perfect for houses like mine where you can only ever find odd socks anyway. These look like everyday black socks above the shoe but are a whole host of colours underneath.

If you would prefer the socks to be unique and handmade then these over the knee socks from Legyviel In Rivendell would be ideal.

However, after those two finds I came to the conclusion, that with a couple of exceptions such as these, socks are not a great present. I did though find some sock inspired presents that may be appreciated more.

These sock purses are great for small change and will make a lovely gift for any small girl that you know. Available in a variety of patterns and colours from United Oddsocks.

Then on Etsy I found some fantastic sock animals. On of my favourites is the pink octopus made by Two by Two, a group of mums who met through their antenatal class. There was also this colourful sock monkey by OddSox.

Finally I found the perfect sock present - for my house anyway. Available from Not On The High Street is the Sock Exchange. Great for holding on to odd socks until the pair turns up. Alternatively you could always start making your own sock animals!

For most of us one of the simple pleasures in life is a good cup of tea or coffee. Whenever I am stuck with something, or work is not going as planned, it is to tea and coffee that I turn. However, I have discovered that it is not just the tea or coffee that matters. We all, I am sure have our favourite mugs - well I know that I do. What better gift to give someone than a mug or cup that will be their favourite when making that reassuring cuppa. So here is my selection of a few of the best out there.

For those who like a colourful cuppa then this mug from 1000degrees Art Studio is ideal. I love the bunting around the edge that conjures up the image of a summer village fete even as we head in to autumn. As a bonus the mug comes with a matching bowl to cheer up breakfast time on the most miserable day.

If you are looking for a more traditional mug then you are likely to find one at Little Brown Mug . They have assembled a collection of handmade and hand painted mugs by art potters. Each mug comes with a postcard listing the artist, date and details of materials, decoration, glaze and firing. I particularly like the range by Les and Sally Sharpe that include this lovely frog design.

For those who would like to hark back to their childhood there are these beautifully illustrated Moomin mugs. Available in a range of designs from Pussy Home Boutique, they have to be one of my favourites as I love the Moomin books. I particularly like this one of the Snork Maiden.

However, if you think that the person you are buying for might prefer a designer touch to their mug then this ISAK mug from Cloudberry would be ideal. Not only does it look great but it has an oak lid to keep warm drinks warm The lid also acts as a coaster if required to protect your tabletops.

From Bob by Post there is this lovely snowflake mug that is ideally suited for those who like a good mug of hot chocolate to wrap their hands
around in the winter. I can already envisage sitting
in front of our real fire with a steaming mug of chocolate.

I was going to end there, but Mr Present Cupboard was disappointed I hadn't mentioned his favourite mug, which he received last christmas from his daughters. So here it is an Egg Yolk Yellow Pantone mug. It has to be said I also love Pantone and if you know someone who has a particular favourite colour then there is a huge range to choose from at Illustrated Living.

Perfect Wrapping for the Perfect Gift

Whilst thinking about the perfect gift it is also a good idea to give the wrapping some thought, after all it is the first thing that your recipient will see. So I have been on the look out for the perfect wrapping paper and gift tags.

So what beautiful things caught my eye?

These are Funky Tree gift tags made by Swirly Arts, are one example of a whole range and are available through Folksy, £2.00 for 10 tags. Lynsey, who owns Swirly Arts, is a work at home mum who loves recycling turning fabrics and paper into gorgeous things to buy.

Dots and Spots is run by another mum, Becky in her studio based near the Mendip Hills in Somerset. I couldn't resist this beautiful bunting gift tag. However if bunting isn't your thing there are many other cards and tags to choose from on the site. For the very organised there are even pudding gift tags for Christmas.

As for the wrapping itself I have found some gorgeous handmade heart pattern paper that would enhance any present. I imagine the recipient will be taking it off carefully to keep. It is available from the Wild Paper priced £5.95 for 3 sheets.

Finally every little girl would love this unique wrapping paper from Penny Lindop Designs. Each fairy is fluffy and the paper comes with a co-ordinating fluffy tag.

Beautiful Bracelets and Bangles

One of the main reasons for starting this blog was that I am constantly amazed by the number of small businesses out there making beautiful items - jewellery is just one of these. There are so many talented and individual jewellery makers out there, who create individual pieces - that there is something out there for every taste and budget. I have decided that there are so many that more than one blog article is needed, so for this piece I am going to focus on bangles and bracelets.

As we all know it is very easy to pop into Accessorize or a high street jeweller when you are looking for a gift for someone. However, why not try out some of the jewellery internet shops I have found, and track down that perfect gift.

Sea Glass Bracelet £27.00

The Beach Shack Project has some stunning bracelets made from sea glass collected on the beaches of Cornwall. The fact that the sea glass has been shaped and smoothed by the action of the sea makes each piece unique. This is then enhanced by the patterns made with the silver plated wire that holds the sea glass in place.

I then found CeeGee Jewellery design where the jewellery is all designed and made by Carolyn Grant. I particularly liked this gorgeous Caribbean Sea Lampwork bracelet, made using Bali sterling silver beads and 3 glass lampwork beads, made in CeeGee Jewellery's own workshop. Once again this is a unique piece that you won't find anywhere else.

If you are looking for something that is a little more chunky then Pennydog Jewellery is a great place to start. Kerry, who runs Pennydog Jewellery, specialises in affordable resin jewellery and has a great range to choose from, such as the transparent moss bangle shown. However, I also love the hundreds and thousands resin bangle, which is exactly as it sounds - hundreds and thousands embedded in resin.

There are many charm bracelets out there, but if you are looking for something with vintage style then Miss Ladysmith is a great website to visit. New pieces are added to the website and Etsy shop every week so there are plenty of items to choose from. This beautiful Mother Earth charm bracelet made from a fantastic range of beads it could be worn in the day or evening.

Finally I found Cloversoul who handcraft their jewellery in their studio situated in the North of England. Their indivdual style using English solid sterling, hand marked silver leads to the production stunning jewellery. It was hard to choose my favourite piece, however in the end I went for this classic Beaten Track Breeze bangle, just the thing to go with that little black dress.

I am sure that there are many more fantastic one off bangles and bracelets available but I could go on for hours, but I have to know when to stop. However, if you have a favourite place to buy jewellery as a gift or for yourself please let me know.

A Jewellery Box Search

Last week I received this request from one of my blog readers.

''Love the blog! Maybe you can help me though ... I've been looking for months now for a handmade/handcrafted jewellery box for my daughter - something that she will keep all her special hair clips, jewels and trinkets in and hopefully treasure for many years. I've trawled Etsy with no joy ... perhaps you might be able to help?! Many thanks''

So a Bratz or Disney jewellery box was not what they were looking for. I was a little concerned that I might just come up with things they had already seen, but always one for a challenge I emailed her and said that I would see what I could find.

My first thought that a wooden box would be a good option as it would age well. I discovered Crafty Boxes who do a range of beautifully made boxes in a range of sizes and prices. My personal favourite - just in case my other half reads this - is the Tsunami box.

Still thinking of wood I then found Katre's Handicraft and Jewellery who make a very simple, but classic handmade juniper wood jewellery box. The juniper wood contains oils that are slowly released giving the box a lovely smell.

After some thought I decided to also look at fabric jewellery boxes. They may not look as long lasting as wood, but if it was a treasured item there is no reason why it can not last. There were not as many fabric jewellery boxes available, and the one I felt most fitted what my reader was looking for was from Eve a shop in Witney, Oxfordshire. The very pretty box has lots of detailing on the top and plenty of space for all those jewels.

I also found this simpler, but nonetheless lovely cupcake box from Saltaire Gifts, which would suit a little girls bedroom, but would not look out of place as she grew up.

Finally I found Petit Home who source their products from suppliers who are artisans, often producing in small quantities, making their products a little different from those that you might find on the high street. Trousselier are a small French company who make beautiful music jewellery boxes decorated with lovely illustrations. Their 2010 range includes the characters Ninon and Nioui.

After searching I emailed my blog reader with these options, she emailed me back to say

'I love, love, love the Trousselier jewellery box - that is exactly what I was after - especially since my daughter has red hair, she will love the figurine inside. In fact I am ordering right now!'

I was delighted that I had found what she had been searching for and I hope that her daughter enjoys the jewellery box for many years to come.

Laptop bags - stylish options

I was looking at my laptop bag today and realised how dull it looks - practical but dull. After some searching on the internet I realised that I could have both beautiful and practical. A distinctive laptop bag makes a great gift for someone who has everything.

As always when looking for bags I visited Cath Kidston, and was delighted to find not only one but two choices for everyones laptop needs. The first is a simple laptop sleeve, great if you don't want to carry about all the bits and bobs that come with a laptop. However, if you are an Orla Kiely fan - which I know I am - then the next bag is for you. The Tripp laptop bag has a beige cotton stem print lining. There is also room for all your bits and pieces with an inner zip pocket and elasticated pouch pockets.

Coming to the end of my blog and I have realised that I have not paid any attention to the man who has everything. A friend of mine has very recently had a baby - which I thought might make me broody. However, cute though they are, I am not sure I could go back to nappies and sleepless nights. What I do like to do is shop for babies, so on went the computer and I hit Google. There are so many choices out there, but if you want to get something that little bit different then you do have to search. I like the idea that a baby gift is something to keep not just an outfit that they will grow out of. So where to begin?

As a mum I know that I have collected over the years a number of keepsakes from when my daughters were babies. I also know that they are spread all over the place - I am not known for my organisational skills. Whilst I was searching for the perfect baby gift I thought about how perfect it would be to have somewhere to put all those special things. New Kitchen Noticeboard

I have been looking for sometime for a new noticeboard for the kitchen - I am getting tired of hunting for all those scraps of paper that tell me what the girls need for school or Brownies.

Anyway after much searching I think I am down to two options. The first is the Pantone Wallstore designed by John Green in a range of colours the question is does the red one match the red in the wallpaper or should I go for a contrasting colour? Yes it is already that time - last minute panics over school uniform and whether it fits, the queues in the shoe shops. So I have been searching for the perfect lunchbox to return to school with. I have tried a number of lunchboxes for my two. The problem I have found is that you don't want something too heavy, or large that will stretch their arms - but you need to fit a decent lunch in there that will keep them going until home time. The other criteria in my search for perfection is something that isn't going to retain a months worth of lunch crumbs in the little corners where it starts to smell - despite being washed out every evening. So the search was on to find my two the perfect back to school lunchbox gift.

Searching for the perfect gift

How many hours have you spent looking for the perfect gift for the person who has everything? I now have lists of places in my head to look for those unique presents that will show how much care and thought I have put into choosing them. However, as age gets the better of me I find great presents whilst searching the web and shopping then a few weeks later I can't recall the fantastic present idea that I had for my cousin/brother/grandmother and they end up with a token!
